Ebook About
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The knockdown, drag-out, untold story of the other scandal that rocked Nixon’s White House, and reset the rules for crooked presidents to come—with new reporting that expands on Rachel Maddow’s Peabody Award-nominated podcast“Rachel Maddow and Michael Yarvitz expand on their riveting podcast to create a work both scholarly and disturbing in its parallels to current events.”—Preet Bharara, New York Times bestselling author of Doing Justice and host of the podcast Stay Tuned with Preet Is it possible for a sitting vice president to direct a vast criminal enterprise within the halls of the White House? To have one of the most brazen corruption scandals in American history play out while nobody’s paying attention? And for that scandal to be all but forgotten decades later? The year was 1973, and Spiro T. Agnew, the former governor of Maryland, was Richard Nixon’s second-in-command. Long on firebrand rhetoric and short on political experience, Agnew had carried out a bribery and extortion ring in office for years, when—at the height of Watergate—three young federal prosecutors discovered his crimes and launched a mission to take him down before it was too late, before Nixon’s impending downfall elevated Agnew to the presidency. The self-described “counterpuncher” vice president did everything he could to bury their investigation: dismissing it as a “witch hunt,” riling up his partisan base, making the press the enemy, and, with a crumbling circle of loyalists, scheming to obstruct justice in order to survive. In this blockbuster account, Rachel Maddow and Michael Yarvitz detail the investigation that exposed Agnew’s crimes, the attempts at a cover-up—which involved future president George H. W. Bush—and the backroom bargain that forced Agnew’s resignation but also spared him years in federal prison. Based on the award-winning hit podcast, Bag Man expands and deepens the story of Spiro Agnew’s scandal and its lasting influence on our politics, our media, and our understanding of what it takes to confront a criminal in the White House.

Book Bag Man: The Wild Crimes, Audacious Cover-Up, and Spectacular Downfall of a Brazen Crook in the White House Review :

nook and cranny subjected to a shining light. If I hadn’t lived thru this blight on American politics, I’d swear it was a piece, a finely honed piece of fiction.Rachel Maddow and her writing partner, Michael Yarvitz, are meticulous in laying out the story of Spiro T. Agnew. From his relative obscurity as governor of Maryland to VP of the US in one of the most highly, publicly corrupt administrations, this investigative pair proffer details that have been previously tangled up in the nonsense of our government.Chapter 9 of the book, “High-Risk Ball”, was the pinnacle for me. Agnew’s lawyers realize that their client is almost untouchable, due to Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution. This is explained in conjunction with all of Agnew’s other “relationships” and the remainder of the book details the lengths and mind boggling depth of pervasive corruption that kept this Brazen Crook out of prison. There are transcripts of conversations between Nixon and Agnew, direct quotes, pictures of documents as well as photographs of the people involved that are injected throughout the text. These are like giant exclamation points to an already razor sharp narrative. Each chapter begins with a b&w line art drawing by Tom Bachtell that’s snarky and totally Maddow worthy. The notes section at the end of the book is broken down by chapter. In the Kindle version it takes the reader back to the location in the book, NOT to the original document.Because these events happened 50 years ago, the language in this book is not an issue like those of contemporary politics. These folks, altho’ they behaved with equal reprehensibility, did so without speaking like uneducated, single adjective addicted simians; our great fortune, at least as far as reading this book is concerned.Kudos to Maddow and Yarvitz for their excellent work and especially for producing it without taking contemporary political potshots. Their book clearly shows the strengths and weaknesses of the justice system, how it removed Agnew from office but failed further action that has left a lasting impact for those who have followed📚
Completely boring and not relevant book that nobody asked for. Who cares about Spiro Agnew in 2020, Nobody. Nice paid for “glowing” review by her buddy Ben Stiller. Ben must have a lot of time to read since his career is over. Don’t waste your money on this Trash.
